Yes she is lucky. Sometimes i feel that my children have missed out a bit. My mother in law is very good and a proper Grandma, but my Mum doesnt have much imput. She is not in great health and visits are spent telling them to be quiet ! My Dad died a few years ago and although they remember him, they were too young to have many good memories. My father in law is a rare visitor, but they enjoy him when hes there. I often see those grandparents in the playground that pick up from school and take the kids out and i feel a bit jealous. But you cant have it all, can you ?

She's a really lucky little girl. I'd give anything for my children to have that kind of relationship with their grandparents. My parents have always lived too far away to be hands-on with my kids and my parents-in-law used to look after them occasionally and have attended every school assembly etc. but again they're not really hands-on. Such a shame because they're all missing out on so much.

Hi Ellie, thank you for your comment. We are not alone thankfully, but it is tough when they stare and make you feel bad.

Hi Carol,

This happens to me on a regular basis, whether I am stood in the post office or doing some shopping! I can usually feel myself getting hot and bothered at the 'bad mother' stares.

Whenever I see someone in that same situation I always give them a look of sympathy or say I know what its like.

But sadly I think once you have passed that stage in life or have never experienced it you just forget what its like to have all eyes on you and being made to feel like your a bad mum.

Your post has made me feel like I am not the only one this happens too, so thank you for taking the time to write it. I can't believe how right you are that the tutting and staring makes the situation worse, never a truer word spoken!

Patience indeed. I think people, women especially, forget what it's like to have small children. They fall into two categories - young, single, not had kids yet and older, been there done that. The first will have it all to come and the latter, well I reckon they must never have left the house!

you can sit next to me. screaming children are fine. post office, supermarkets, library, bus, train, no problem. they have to scream and they are sometimes only doing what i want to do anyhow. and i've had a lot of practice with screaming kids. that helps.

That sounds exactly like train journeys I have experienced. I never let J even think about walking up and down the train no matter how much he wanted too, your not mean, your being a safe mummy :) It always pee's me right off that people dont offer to help with buggies on and off trains, if I'm out alone now especially on the tube I make a point of offering a hand to mums with buggies. Its such hard work!

Well done on surviving the journey!
