Campaign for Learning Launches family fun numeracy challenge |
The Campaign for Learning is launching its first ever nationwide family learning challenge.
As part of the Family Learning Festival, taking place throughout England this month, families will be encouraged to use their maths skills together by entering an online treasure hunt: The Number Island Family Treasure Hunt, located on the World Wide Web at www.welovelearning.co.uk . All families that enter will have a chance of winning some great family prizes from days out to fun activities to do indoors.
The family learning challenge has been endorsed by David Lammy, the Minister for Skills at the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills, who is encouraging families to take part.
“The memory of maths lessons probably still causes fear in many adults who have long left formal education. We know, however, that poor numeracy affects many and harms job prospects. Learning maths with our children can be fun and is a great first step for those concerned about their numeracy levels but put off by their impression of formal learning. Anyone wanting to find out more about family learning and developing their maths skills should call the freephone helpline 0800 100 900. There are many free Government funded courses on offer - no one should just get by.”
Chief executive of the campaign for learning, Tricia Hartley, agrees: “The Number Island Family Treasure Hunt is about getting all the family involved. It’s fun for children and has some great prizes, but is also a great way for adults to get engaged in their children’s learning and to think about further learning themselves.
“It introduces everybody to the idea that learning can be fun, informal, and lifelong. We hope that families learning together will create a real sense of achievement for everyone.”
While the competition is being held online, this shouldn’t be an obstacle to families without Internet access. The UK online centre, contactable on 0800 77 1234, can advise on free or low-cost access to computers and the Internet.
The Number Island Family Treasure Hunt is part of the Campaign for Learning’s Family Learning Festival, a series of events that run nationwide, throughout October. Events are organised by local organisations and institutions and designed for participation by the whole family.
More information on the Festival, including listings and how to take part, can be found at www.welovelearning.co.uk or by calling 0800 100 900.
