South Essex has a host of fascinating sights for the discerning
visitor. An area sometimes overshadowed by the metropolis, this part of
the county provides the inquisitive traveller with a sense of
exploration and discovery. Who could resist a visit to Battlesbridge,
one of the best antiques centres in the country, followed by an
afternoon in Old Leigh to experience the culinary delights offered by
the cockle sheds? South Essex Sights 1. William Morris Gallery, Loughton – this is the only public museum devoted to England’s best known and most versatile designer and was his family home from 1848 to 1856. The Gallery’s internationally important collections illustrate William Morris’s life, work and influence. (0208 527 3782; www.lbwf.gov.uk/wmg). 2. Waltham Abbey Church – this is a fine example of a Norman Abbey founded in 1060 by King Harold who is reputedly buried here. The Abbey at Waltham was the last in the country to be dissolved by Henry VIII in 1540. A settlement existed here in Saxon times but the earliest recorded history of the town dates back to the reign of King Canute. The National Jazz Archive, Loughton – A unique national research and information centre available to jazz enthusiasts, students and the general public. It is well stocked with rare books, discographies, periodicals, photographs and memorabilia with an emphasis on British material but also some foreign works. (0208 502 0181; www.nationaljazzarchive.co.uk). 4. Copped Hall, Epping – now a burnt out shell, this fine Georgian mansion has a recorded history starting in the 12th century. It is superbly sited on a ridge overlooking its own beautifully landscaped parkland. Join one of their guided tours to find out about famous visitors such as Henry VIII, Queen Mary and Cornwallis. Harlow Sculpture Collection – Harlow, conceived and designed by Sir Frederick Gibberd more than 50 years ago, pioneered the practice of sculpture out in the living environment and is now home to an extensive collection including works by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Rodin, Antanas Brazdys, Elizabeth Frink and Ralph Brown. 6. The Gibberd Gallery – home to Harlow’s permanent collection of 20th century British watercolours and drawings as well as a changing programme of contemporary art exhibitions (01279 446438; www.harlow.gov.uk). 7. The Playhouse, Harlow – the Playhouse hosts a wide range of events including traditional theatre, ballet and contemporary dance, classical music events, comedy and pantomimes (01279 431945; www.visitharlow.com). 8. Moulsham Mill, Chelmsford – a landmark on the River Chelmer, after falling into disuse it was refurbished in 1985 and now houses a variety of craft workshops. The Mill also has its own teashop (01245 608200; www.moulshammill.co.uk). 9. Civic Theatre, Chelmsford – the theatre prides itself on its friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The theatre hosts a diverse programme of high quality theatre, classical drama, musical programme and all time family favourites (01245 606505; www.chelmsford.gov.uk). 10. Chelmsford Cathedral – every summer the cathedral hosts a festival which includes classical concerts, jazz, art exhibitions and a massive fringe (01245 294489; www.chelmsfordcathedral.org.uk). 11. Battlesbridge Antique Centre – located in a picturesque setting by the River Crouch, this is one of the country’s leading antique centres. Housed in a former mill, you will find more than 80 dealers (01268 575000; www.battlebridge.com) 12. Old Leigh – take a walk into the old town and visit The Leigh Triangle. At the Lynn Tait Gallery you can see a superb collection of local pictures. At Leigh Studios you may find local potter and artist Richard Baxter at work. Alternatively you can visit the many events such as the Leigh Art Trail (www.leigharttrail.co.uk), the Folk Festival (www.leighfolkfestival.co.uk) or Old Leigh Regatta. 13. Beecroft Art Gallery – this gallery houses 2,000 paintings including works by Constable, Molenart and Seago and is also home to an excellent historic costume collection (01702 347418; www.beecroft-art-gallery.co.uk). 14. Focal Point Gallery – located in Southend Central Library on Victoria Avenue, this is a photographic gallery offering high calibre exhibitions of national and international standing (01702 534108; www.focalpoint.org.uk). 15. Cliffs Pavilion – the largest purpose built performing arts venue in Essex.
